Abstract
625,775. Mould materials; moulding processes. MORTON, J. A., ANDREW, J. H., and PROTHEROE, H. T. March 27, 1947, No. 8332. [Class 83 (i)] Moulds for casting metal are faced with a mixture of refractory material, highly-viscous organic binder, and a small proportion of finelydivided stable reducing metal or alloy, the oxide of which has a higher heat of formation than iron oxide and is refractory. The refractory, e.g. sillimanite with 0.5 to 2 per cent of aluminium or its alloy, magnesium or ferrosilicon &c. is milled, preferably after adding 10 per cent of a 6 per cent gel of the substance known under the Registered Trade Mark " Cellofas W.F.Z." in water or of a 6 per cent solution of cellulose acetate in diacetone alcohol, until a dull grey mixture is produced. The backing sand preferably contains <SP>1</SP>/ 16 to 1 per cent of sulphur. If green sand is used for backing, moulding sand is used for the facing and less of the reducing metal is required therein. Specification 625,769 is referred to.
