Abstract
595,795. Casting processes. K. & L. STEELFOUNDERS & ENGINEERS, Ltd., JAZWINSKI, S. T., and FINCH, S. L. March 9,1945, No. 5947. [Class 83 (i)] In casting metal into a mould having a blind feeder head 1, there is introduced into said head, before pouring, a charge of material adapted, after a continuous envelope 7 of solid metal has been formed in said head, to evolve gas and force liquid metal from the head into the mould cavity 2. The charge 4, Fig. 3, may be suspended by wire 5 and is enclosed in a vessel of steel, copper &c. or coated with bonded refractory material, e.g. sillimanite, to delay the formation of gas until a sufficient skin has been formed. The charge 4 may consists of an organic substance, e.g. 0.5 to 20 g. of linseed oil or chalk and molasses, or 2 to 40 g. of an exiothermic substance, e.g. iron oxide and aluminium or copper oxide, aluminium, and graphite. The runner 3 may be closed after pouring, e.g. by a valve 10, Fig. 3, which floats on the molten metal. The Provisional Specification describes a modification in which the head is not blind.
