Abstract
809,629. Alloys. DAUSSAN, H. J. Jan. 21, 1957 [Jan. 20, 1956], No. 2085/57. Class 82(1) [Also in Group XXII] Fumes and gases from cast metal are collected in a chamber carried by an apertured float which floats on the molten metal. A float A<SP>1</SP> of fireproof material pierced by channels 2 rests on the surface of the melt in an ingot mould L<SP>1</SP>, and is surmounted by a chamber 4 into which passes gases and fumes from the melt through the channels 2. A vessel 7 within the chamber with an easily heat-destructible bottom 8, contains a charge of melt additives such as lead, sulphur, carbon or compounds thereof, in powder, granular, or paste form. A vessel 5 contains a fluid 6 such as water, for cooling by evaporation. The gases may liquefy in the chamber and return to the melt in a cyclic process, or they may be absorbed in a porous fillng e.g. carbon, caustic soda &c. in the chamber 4. Additives may be placed directly in the chamber 4 in channels 2. When top pouring, the stream may pass through a sheath 14 Fig. 4, connecting the float and ladle nozzle, said sheath being either telescopic as shown, or of a material progressively destroyed by the rising melt. Additives 9a are arranged at the bottom of the sheath so that they are carried along by the casting stream.
