Abstract
The molten metal flows down a feed pipe to form a sump surrounded by a ring inductor which determines the shape of the periphery of the melt. Below the inductor is a ring cooler which causes the solidification of the sump on a baseplate lowered to draw the cast billet out of the inductor, i.e. the inductor forms the "mould". The surface of the molten sump is coveed by a protective medium, specifically a gas at low pressure or molten liq. pref. an electrically-conducting slag and/or refining flux. In one pref. plant, the upper pat of the molten sump is surrounded by a ring supporting a cover with a skirt which dips into the sump to retain the slag and/or flux on the surface of the sump. The cover contains the feed pipe and a sensor monitoring the height of the sump. Used for casting metals which do not form their own thick oxide skin and/or have a high vapour pressure when molten, e.g. Cu and its alloys such as Cu-Zn.
