Abstract
585,441. Continuous easting-machines. BYRNE, E. L. W. (American Smelting & Refining Co.). Dec. 27, 1944, No. 25936. [Class 83 (i)] In continuous casting by means of an ovenended vertical mould 14, solidification in the upper part of the mould is prevented by restricting the cross-section of the molten column and insulating this constricted portion. The restriction may be effected by a delivery tube 18 connected to the reservoir 10 and it may be insulated by refractory material 28, e.g. cement known under the Registered Trade Mark " Alundum." Immediately below the constricted portion, the mould is cooled by a water jacket 22. This avoids the formation of thin solid walls on a still-molten interior and consequent surface defects. The mould may be made of material according to Specification 468,177. The tube 18 may have a regulating valve. Copper or its alloys may be thus cast at 1260‹ C.
