Abstract
1499318 Pouring ingots BRITISH STEEL CORP 31 Oct 1975 [8 Nov 1974] 48439/74 Heading B3F In the bottom pouring of a plurality of ingot moulds 9 through runners 5, a central feeding trumpet 1 includes a restriction 3 at its lower end to cause the build up of a head 12 of molten steel to reduce air entrapment and to lessen turbulence in the moulds. The restriction 3 has a lead-in 4, or is tapered, e.g. over a number of surmounting refractory hollow bricks. The top brick is flared and a cast iron sleeve 10 contains the bricks. The restriction 3 has a cross-sectional area between # and “ of the bore of the rest of the trumpet. In an alternative arrangement (Fig. 2, not shown) a tundish is directly connected to the trumpet and the head of molten steel above the restriction reaches the liquid level in the tundish. The tundish includes a weir (15) to promote degassing, but a gap at one end of the weir enables the tundish to be completely emptied.
