Abstract
1304826 Casting rimming steel ingots KONINKLIJKE NEDERLANDSCHE HOOGOVENS EN STAALFABRIEKEN NV 11 Aug 1971 [14 Aug 1970] 37776/71 Heading B3F [Also in Division C7] A rimming steel is cast into an ingot mould in a single and uninterrupted pouring operation and killed after the initiation of rimming by the addition of a deoxidizing agent to the unsolidified core of the ingot. After the deoxidizing agent addition, the unsolidified core is homogenized by blowing a gas therethrough from a lance which has been introduced into the steel downwardly to the proximity of the lower end of the ingot mould. As exemplified, a steel containing: is cast at 1565‹ C. into a big-end-down ingot mould fitted with a hot-top liner, while 50 g. NaF +50 g. fine Al grains/ton steel is added. After 6 minutes effervescing, the steel is killed by introducing Al ribbon vertically from above down into the steel. Immediately thereafter a steel lance is introduced into the molten steel and air at 5¢ atm./g. passed into the steel to agitate and homogenize it. The steel lance partially melts.
