Abstract
1428204 Adding lead to steel INLAND STEEL CO and ECHEVARRIA SA 25 May 1973 [25 May 1972] 25177/73 Heading C7D Lead is added to steel by forming a bath of molten steel (11) in a ladle (10), closing the top of the ladle to isolate the ladle interior from the atmosphere, adding lead to the molten steel after the top closing step, stirring the bath with an inert gas (26) during at least part of the lead adding step while maintaining a gaseous atmosphere over the bath during the lead adding and stirring steps and removing gases from the ladle while maintaining the gaseous atmosphere. The lead may be added in pellet form to steel (11) at a temperature greater than that suitable for casting (e.g. 3100‹F) and at which the steel can accomodate a lead content from 0.3-0.4% and the steel subsequently cooled either by reladling or by continuous agitation with inert gas (e.g. argon) to a temperature suitable for casting (e.g. 2800‹F). The steel may be deslagged prior to entry into the ladle or alternatively the lead may be added to a slag free region of the bath surface (40). A super-atmospheric pressure of inert gas may be maintained above the bath and a deoxidizer e.g. aluminium may be added to the bath prior to the addition of the lead. The lead may be added to the bath (11) in Fig.2 concomittant with the stream of molten steel (52) from the small ladle (50) atop the main ladle (10). The resultant bath of molten steel containing lead may be poured or teemed into ingot moulds or the tundish of a continuous casting plant.
