Abstract
Flat horizontal steel ingots with a larger width than height are cast from a ladle into long, moving, horizontal moulds with an open top surface in a protective atmos. free from O2. After casting, the ingot is cooled in the mould by feeding a coolant, e.g. water or liq. N2 onto the top surface of the ingot. The coolant is pref. employed within 1-120, esp. 10-60 seconds after casting, esp. using (a) water within 30-60 second after casting, and for a period of 8-12 second; or (b) liq. N2 while the mould is still in the protective atmos. After cooling the top surface of the ingot, the mould is pref. rotated 180 degrees on its axis so any pores form in the middle and not on the surface of the ingot. The pref. plant uses an air-tight tunnel filled with inert gas, and with a conveyor carrying the moulds through the tunnel and under a tundish; a weighing machine is used to control the wt. of metal poured into each mould, and heaters are used to keep the top surface of the ingots in a plastic state after salification. Flat steel ingots are obtd. with an excellent surface quality and without segregation.
