Abstract
PURPOSE: To perform continuous castings on thin casting pieces, by putting the molten steel into a saucer-shaped mold whose bottom face is cooled with water, and by continuously drawing the solidified layer cooled and solidified at the bottom in the direction along the circular arc-shaped tangent line of the mold.
CONSTITUTION: A constant amount of molten steel is poured from a tundish 2 into a saucer-shaped copper made mold 4 supported its bottom by a frame 5 provided with a water cooling device 6. At the bottom of the copper-made mold 4, a thin dummy plate is laid in advance. Since the molten steel at the bottom of mold which is cooled by the water cooling device 6 forms a thin solidified layer, this solidified layer is pulled out as a thin continuous casting piece 8 by means of the dummy plate in the direction of the circular arc-shaped tangent line of the saucer-shaped mold 4, and the casting piece 8 is taken out after it is cooled by a casting piece cooling means 10. By adjusting the amount of cooling water to be used by the cooling device 6 of the mold 4, the forming speed of the solidified layer, and the pulling out speed of the casting piece 8, any desirable thickness can be obtained from the casting piece.
