Abstract

PURPOSE:To decrease center porosities and center segregation by reciprocatively moving ultrasonic wave transmission bodies on the top surface of an ingot in the drawing direction of the ingot thereby applying ultrasonic wave vibrations to the ingot which has not completed solidification in horizontal continuous casting. CONSTITUTION:Molten metal 1 is poured from a tundish 2 into a water-cooled mold 3, and while a solidified layer 7 is being formed, it is drawn rightward. The formed ingot 6 is supported with guide rolls 4, and gradually increases the thickness of the layer 7, but up to a predetermined distance, an unsolidified molten layer 5 is remained in the inside. Ultrasonic vibrations are applied to the molten layer 5 of the ingot 6 by the ultrasonic wave transmission bodies consisting of the rolls 4A, 4B which are driven by motors to roll on the top surface of the ingot 6 while revolving forward and backward. Thereby, the isometric zone 15 in the ingot 6 is made wider, the development of the columnar crystal 16 on the inner side of the chill crystal 17 on the outermost part is suppressed and the segregation is considerably reduced.
