Abstract
PURPOSE:To cast a thin walled ingot free from cracking, etc. at the solidification interface continuously by forming the bottom part of a mold to an arc shape, drawing the solidified layer under force cooling from the bottom surface, oscillating the mold, measuring the thickness of the ingot and regulating the speed of drawing. CONSTITUTION:The molten steel 1 in a tundish 2 is supplied to a mold 4 of which the surface in the bottom part is formed to a curved hollow shape. The steel 1 forms a solidified layer 8' on account of the cooling structure 6 provided in the bottom part of the mold 4. The layer 8' formed on the mold wall forms an ingot 8 which is drawn in a horizontal direction by drawing rolls 9 screwed down by screw-down devices 11. The mold 4 is oscillated back and forth along the curving direction by using an oscillating device such as a crank mechanism 16 to accelerate the inclusion of a covering material 14. An ingot thickness measuring device 12 is provided between the mold 4 and the rolls 9 to measure ingot thickness. This thickness is compared and operated with the preset drawing speed by a drawing speed controller 13, whereby an optimum drawing speed is determined and in accordance with this, the driving of the rolls 9 is controlled.
