Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve quality by providing a melt well at one end of a mold, positioning the leading end of an ultrasonic wave transmission horn into the molten metal just before this and applying ultrasonic waves to the molten metal thereby solidifying the part near the surface of a cast ingot to a fine crystal and the internal part thereof to a columnar crystal. CONSTITUTION:A heat insulating melt well 3 is provided to the top end of a water cooled mold 1, and molten metal 4 is charged into the well 3. Thence, the leading end of an ultrasonic wave transmission horn 5 is installed just before the position where the molten metal 4 contacts the mold 1. Ultrasonic oscillations are applied to the molten metal 4, and a solidified ingot 6 is drawn out continuously. In this way, the part near the surface of the ingot solidifies to a fine crystal and the internal part to a columnar crystal, and these contribute to improved quality.
