Abstract
PURPOSE: To obviate the occurrence of cracking in the Al alloy cast ingot being continuously produced, at the time of its unbending, by providing a heat retaining zone for the cast ingot between the mold and unbending section in the rotary ring type continuous casting machine.
CONSTITUTION: Molten metal 10 is poured from above into the moving mold spacing constituted by the water-cooled pouring rotary ring 7 provided externally with a pouring groove 8 and a metal belt 9 covering part of the groove 8. The slab 11 of which at least the outside surface has been frozen goes out from the mold spacing 21 and enters a heat retaining zone 16, where the crystallized β phase is diffused into the slab 11, after which it goes out from the outlet of the casting ring and is subjected to unbending straightning in a section 22. After it is cooled in a press 13, it is drawn out by pinch rollers 12, whereby it is continuously cast. The heat retaining zone 16 is of the moving type comprising connecting, e.g., the units packed with refractories 19 in cases made of steel plates 18 into caterpillar type and cools the side not in contact with the slab 11 by cooling water 20. The heat retaining zone 16 is so arranged as to make contact with the slab 11 from the outlet of the mold, advance together with the slab and detach from the slab 11 just before its unbending.
