A process for continuously casting steel ingots, especially rams, in a continuous casting facility, the ingot being extracted from a chilled oscillating shell, containing a steel melt covered by a layer of slag or respectively of foundry powders, to continue being cooled in a secondary cooling zone following the chill, characterized in that the temperature of the surface of the steel ingot in the secondary cooling zone, which amounts to 1250-800ºC, and the softening temperature of the powders of melting or respectively of the slag of the melt, which amounts to 1150-750ºC, are coordinated with each other in such a way that during the time the ingot passes through the secondary cooling zone, every point on the surface of the ingot has a temperature of at most 150ºC above the slag softening temperature, or, in case of exceeding this e limit of 150ºC, that the duration of the excess of any point on the surface of the ingot does not amount to more than 2 minutes.
