Abstract

1,175,215. Casting processes. UNITED STATES STEEL CORP. 21 March, 1967 [6 April, 1966], No. 13258/67. Heading B3F. In a method of producing sized pieces of ferromanganese without crushing and screening, molten ferromanganese is cast in layers in a confined area 10, the surface of each layer being cooled and solidified before pouring a succeeding layer and the last layer being water cooled, the thermal stresses set up on the solidified surface of each layer and on the water cooled top layer causing fracture cleavages that result in the self-fracturing of the layers into pieces. The size of the pieces can be controlled by varying the thickness of the layers. Each layer may be surface cooled by air or water. The confined area 10 is defined by walls 14 of loose piles of refractory material, which may be ferromanganese, placed on a refractory pad 16 and the walls may be removed for extracting the pieces of ferromanganese. Loose ferromanganese may be spread on the bottom of the confined area to protect the pad 16 from thermal shock and facilitate removal of the cast ferromanganese. The molten ferromanganese is poured from ladle cars 11 movable along tracks to casting areas where the melt is poured via troughs 12 that gently flow the molten metal on to each layer without intermixing and fusion between layers.
