Abstract
PURPOSE: To economically manufacture a manganese or manganese alloy ingot of high quality, by melting a raw material under an atmosphere of inert gas in a plasma arc furnace and solidifying the molten material.
CONSTITUTION: The raw material is conducted from a storage vessel 4 into a scull crucible 3 through a feeder 5. The scull crucible is located in a melting chamber 1. The air in the furnace 1 is removed in the direction of the arrow. The inert gas such as argon is then introduced into the furnace so that the pressure in the furnace becomes 0.5 to 10 atmosphere. The pressure is regulated by a pressure control valve 6. Plasma 9 is produced by energization to melt the material in the crucible 3. The plasma is thereafter turned off. The molten material is solidified in the crusible 3 or poured into a mold 10, thereby marking the ingot. This ingot can be manufactured by a continuous melting and casting system different from said furnace. The ingot is appropriate as a magnetic material, hydrogen occluder or the like.
