Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve workability and productivity and produce cast ingots of desired composition by charging additive elements or additives in the form of grains or mass through the hollow part provided to a consumable electrode consisting of molten metal or alloy, and melting these together with the electrode.
CONSTITUTION: The inside of a mold 6 and a hopper 8 are put in a vacuum or inert gas atmosphere, and the melting of an electrode 1 is started by conducting electricity between a consumable electrode 1 consisting of molten metal or alloy and a molding board 5. On stabilizing of the arc of melting, the stopper 9 in the lower part of the hopper 8 is operated to discharge a proper amt. of additive elements or additives 7 which are introduced by a feeder 10 into the hollow part 2 of the electrode 1, and are allowed to fall into a molten pool 11. The charged additive elements or additives are melted by the heat of the molten metal and the arc, and mix with the molten metal from the electrode 1. These are cooled by the mold 6 to solidify, whereby an ingot 12 of desired composition is formed.
