Abstract
PURPOSE: To manufacture the titled ingot of high quality by melt casting Cr or Cr alloy with plasma arc of Ar gas or the like in a nonoxidizing gas atmosphere while carrying out deoxidation and desulfurization refining in the presence of a refining agent and multicomponent type molten slag.
CONSTITUTION: After replacing air in melting chamber 4 with Ar gas, Cr or Cr alloy A is charged into water-cooled crucible 2, and plasma arc 9 is formed by supplying an electric current between water-cooled surface plate 7 and plasma torch 8 using Ar gas from DC power source 20 to heat melt a material A. At this time, the internal pressure of chamber 4 is maintained under ordinary pressure or a constant elevated pressure by working a leak valve, and to material A are added one or more among Al, Mn, etc. as a refining agent and one or more kinds of multicomponent type molten slag S such as CaO and Na2O+K2O at a desired time. Molten metal B formed at the upper part of crucible 2 is purified with slag S and successively solidified by cooling with crucible 2 and plate 7. Ingot C thus obtd. is carried 19 from stand 18 by lowering rod 17 of taking-out device 16. This ingot contains very little impurities such as S and O.
