Abstract

PURPOSE: To industrially obtain an alloy for a superior H2 occluding or shape memorizing material by applying a 2-step method consisting of the plasma arc melting of starting material and the vacuum arc melting of the resulting ingot used as an electrode to a Ti alloy.
CONSTITUTION: Starting material prepared by blending Ti with one or more among Fe, Co and Ni in a prescribed ratio is fed to a water-cooled melting furnace using plasma arc as a heat source and primarily melted with arc heat in an inert gaseous atmosphere. The molten metal is solidified, and using the resulting ingot as an electrode secondary melting is carried out by vacuum melting or plasma arc melting. Thus, a press molding or welding process for forming an electrode for primary melting is made unnecessary, and Fe, Co or Ni powder which is easily contaminated is not required. Since a water-cooled copper mold is used, contamination due to C and O in a crucible material is prevented. Accordingly, a uniform clean Ti alloy with favorable characteristics is obtd.
