Abstract

PURPOSE: To remove and refine C, N and other impurites while reducing the consumption of plasma torch electrode by decreasing stepwise the oxygen partial pressure in inert gas as plasma working gas at the time of refining low-carbon stainless steel by a plasma arc melting method.
CONSTITUTION: Steel scrap, return scrap, Fe-Cr, Fe-Ni are charged into the crucible 7 in the plasma arc furnace and a furnace cover 8 is put on. After Ar gas is fed into a melting chamber 12 from an Ar gas cylinder 18, the charged raw material is melted by supplying current to an induction coil 9. The molten slag formed at this time is removed, after which CaO-Al2O3-base flux is charged from a storage tank 15 and while the mixed gases of O2 partial pressure 0.5atm are being flowed by Ar gas and the O2 gas from a cylinder 22, plasma arc is formed between a plasma torck 16 and molten metal M, whereby the molten metal is heated and its impurities such as C, N, Pb, Sn and Zn are oxidation-removed. The slag is renewed and the oxygen partial pressure is decreased along with the progression of the refining, whereby the refining is repeated and the high-quality stainless steel is provided without oxidizing Cr and consuming the plasma torch 16.
