Abstract
565,154. Ingot moulds; mould materials. FERRO ENGINEERING CO. May 27, 1943, No. 8502. Convention date, July 30, 1942. [Class 83 (i)] To reduce the amount of waste metal in a sink head 11, a hot top is used having a lining of exothermic material 20, Fig. 3, applied as a paste or in dried blocks, to the semipermanent lining 18. The hot top may be made wholly of refractory material 32, Fig. 7, and a lining 33 of exothermic material may extend over the whole surface. The lining 20 or 33 may be shaped to cause a constriction C between the sink head 11 and ingot 10. The exothermic lining may be applied to a recess in.the lower part of the inner face of a refractory hot-top 35, Fig. 8, as a paste 37. The constriction C or projections 36 assist in secuiing crane bits of a handling crane. The exothermic lining may include coal, coke breeze, tar and graphite, ferro-silicon, aluminium dross, straw, oat or rice hulls, &c., and is preferably sealed off from the cast metal by a coating impervious to the gases produced in use. The refractory materials 18, 32, 35 comprise high insulating refractories which will not withstand direct contact with molten metal. A layer of insulating or exothermic material 21 may be placed on top of the cast metal. Specification 532,243 is referred to.
