Abstract
In the determination of the carbon equivalent of hypereutectic cast iron by measurement of the liquidus arrest point on the cooling curve there is initially added to the molten sample a carbide stabilizer which retards graphite formation, thereby rendering the arrest point more clearly defined. The stabilizer may be or include Bi, B, Ce, Pb, Mg or Te but should not include Si. The stabilizer may be added to the molten sample, or may be disposed on the wall of the sampling mould.
