Abstract
827,665. Induction furnaces. SEGSWORTH, R. S. Nov. 15, 1956, No. 35020/56. Class 39(3) [Also in Group II] An induction furnace comprises an outer box 10 formed of rigid heat insulating material, e.g. asbestos board, and containing removable inner furnace box 12 in which an induction coil 16 is located, thermal and electrical insulation and also mechanical support for the coil being provided by refractory cement. The cement on the inside surfaces 24 of the coil is reinforced by a single layer of asbestos cloth to form a lining 25. A conventional crucible set into the coil lining by heat insulating material may be provided but it is preferred to form a melting pot by inserting a thin metallic former 27 around which refractory material 28 is rammed; the former 27 is removed prior to undertaking the first melt or it may be removed by the first melt. Water conducting power leads 36 are secured to terminals 22 of the coil. The furnace is supported on a pin 39 engaging a primary fulcrum bracket 38, and arms 41a have sockets 46 for engagement with pins 47 provided on the outer box 10. To tip the furnace, pressure cylinders 43 are operated, and initial tipping occurs on the bracket 38, Fig. 3. As the piston 50 of the cylinders are further extended, the pins 47 move in to the sockets 46 and the bracket 38 moves upwardly and clear of the pin 39. The cylinders 43 may be double acting.
