Abstract

560,407. Electric furnaces. DEHN, F. B. (Clarkiron, Inc.). Dec. 24, 1941, No. 16636. [Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group XIII - In an electric melting furnace melting is effected in a refractory tube 2 surrounded by a carbon or graphite tube 4, or a series of carbon or graphite rods. A supporting tube 5 is spaced slightly from the tube 4 to avoid excessive heating, and a refractory tube 6 is similarly spaced from the tube 5. A heat insulating tube 7 is added and an opening 8 provided for admission of air. The tube 4 is inductively heated by a surrounding coil of conducting tube 9. The melting tube 2 is mounted on a collecting chamber 11 with which it communicates by a restricted opening 12. This chamber is of refractory material 16 surrounded by heat insulation 14 and by an induction coil 15. If the molten material is not sufficiently conductive, e.g. glass, the chamber 11 may have a wall of conducting material or it may be otherwise heated. A number of melting chambers may be mounted on a single collecting chamber. The chamber 11 may be otherwise heated, e.g. it may be a hearth furnace.
