Abstract
444,317. Tempering glass. TENNANT, W. J., 111, Hatton Garden, London.-(Assurex Le Roi Des Verres De Securite, Magnien, Monnier, & Cie; 231, Rue du Faubourg St. Martin, Paris) Sept. 11, 1934, No. 26108. [Class 56] [See also Group XI] Apparatus for heating a glass sheet in the operation of tempering, comprises two parallel walls 1 between which the glass sheet 5 is disposed, and metal rods 3 which pass through apertures in the walls and may be moved close to, or into contact with, the glass sheet. Means are provided for heating the rods to a temperature higher than that attained by the walls 1, and to such a degree that points of the glass are heated to the softening temperature while the surrounding areas are less highly heated. The rods 3 are supported by the outer walls 2 of the furnace, and screws 7, 9 enable the walls 1, 2 to be adjusted to and from one another and the glass sheet 5. The walls 1 may be heated by any suitable means, and the rods 3 may be heated by surrounding them with electric resistance coils 4, linings being provided in the apertures for thermally insulating the rods from the walls. Preferably, the apparatus is constructed as an induction furnace, the rods and the walls being constructed of metals having different self-regulation or Curie points.
