Abstract

439,537. Glass manufacture. ASSUREX LE ROI DES VERRES DE SECURITE MAGNIEN, MONNIER, & CIE, 231, Rue du Faubourg St. Martin, Paris. Jan. 11, 1935, No. 1069. Convention date, Jan. 15, 1934. [Class 56] [See also Groups XII and XI] In the heating of glass plates prior to tempering, the plates 4 are suspended from supports 5 in a furnace 1 in which the heating is effected by radiation from uniformly heated metal walls 2, 3, the free space between the plates 4 and the walls 2, 3 being reduced to such an extent that the formation of convection currents in the atmosphere enveloping the plates is avoided. In a furnace having a height of 1.5 metres, the distance between the walls 2, 3 is within the range 70 to 150 m.m. Fig. 1 shows a furnace in which the walls 2, 3 are heated by vertically spaced electric resistance elements 6, while Fig. 2 shows an induction furnace encircled by a primary 8 and having series of superposed secondaries constituting the side walls 2, 3. Each secondary consists of a sheet 9 of non-magnetic conducting material which completely surrounds a longitudinal band formed of a magnetic metal whose magnetism disappears at a temperature slightly higher than that to which the plates 4 are to be heated.
