533,977. Electric induction furnaces. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. (Ferguson, J.). Oct. 23, 1939, No. 28445. [Class 39 (iii)] An induction furnace suitable for glass manufacture, comprises an annular trough 10 through the centre of which passes a vertical laminated core 21 of magnetic material, forming part of a ring carrying an alternating current winding, and a direct current winding to control the saturation of the magnetic core. The trough 10 contains a secondary ring of graphite 12 with a core 13 of molybdenum to prevent it from floating. Apertures 15 are provided for circulation of the molten material. To provide a higher temperature at one point, e.g. near the shoot 18, than at another, e.g. the discharge opening 29, the effective cross section of the ring 12 is reduced at the zone 30 by closer spacing of the apertures 15, and the electrical resistance thereby increased.
