642,199. Induction furnaces. BIRLEC, Ltd. Feb. 28, 1948, No. 6251. Convention date, Nov. 13, 1943. [Class 39(iii)] In an induction furnace of the submerged resistor type having three straight connection channels 4, 5 between the hearth 2 and a horizontal channel 7 which together form two secondary melting loops threaded by two primary coils 8, the channels are of uniform cross sectional area and the cross sectional area of the bottom channel 7 is greater than that of any of the channels 4, 5. The furnace is suitable for melting light metals and the straight vertical channels 4, 5 have no flaring end portions. The ratio of the cross-sectional areas of the horizontal channel 7, the central vertical channel 5 and each of the outer lateral channels 4 approximates to 3:2:1. The roof part of the bottom channel 7 and the bottom section of the hearth are each formed with a groove leading to the vertical channels. Air is blown over the primary coils 8, which are of rectangular cross section each wound on a closed iron core 10 and may be connected in series or parallel.
