Abstract

611,549. Induction furnaces. TAMA, M. April 30, 1946. No. 13088. Convention date, May 24, 1945. [Class 39 (iii)] A submerged resistor type induction furnace with improved cleansing means for slag, &c., during operation, comprises two hearths 1 and 2 having their bottoms at different levels and connected by straight melting channels 3, 4 and 5 inclined at an angle of approximately 40 to 50 degrees. Impurities are conducted to a recess 7 in hearth 1 via chamber 2 and channels 3, 4 and 5. Openings 14 are provided in the wall 13 of hearth 2 such that straight cleaning tools may be used during operation to remove the slag from the channels and recess. Transformer assemblies comprising iron cores 6 and primary coils 8 are threaded through secondary loops formed by the channels. The coils 8 may be Scott connected to a 3-phase supply. A furnace for a single-phase supply is also described.
