Abstract

809,759. Induction furnaces. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA, A. B. March 6, 1957 [March 15, 1956], No. 7373/57. Class 39(3) . Substantially uniform heating of workpieces, particularly thin-walled tubular members, is produced in a single phase cross field induction furnace in which the plane containing the legs of a coil section 1 is at 90‹ to the plane in which the legs of a coil section 2 are disposed. The resulting fields represented by H 1 , H 2 are thus at right angles to each other. A laminated iron shell member 3 may be provided and the coil may be two separate parts, Figs. 4-6 (not shown). Preferably, in heating thin-walled tubes the following equation is at least approximately satisfied:- in which (where R, r,=the external and internal radii respectively, of the tube) v (cm)/(sec) = the speed of advance of the tubes through the furnace, c (Watt sec/cm<SP>3</SP> ‹C)=the specific heat of the tubes, #(Watt/cm ‹C) = the coefficient of thermal conductivity of the tubes.
