Abstract

954,991. Zone-melting. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 14, 1960 [Oct. 19, 1959], No. 35302/60. Heading B1S. [Also in Division H5] In the passage of a molten zone through a material by means of an induction heating coil, at least one solid-liquid interface is maintained substantially flat by means of an adjacent opposed induction coil of insufficient strength to effect melting. The material may be germanium or silicon, and may be in the form of powder or a pre-formed rod. As shown, a central coil 2 is connected in series with a pair of adjacent coils 4 and 5 in parallel with one another to produce moving liquid surfaces 6 and 7 of slightly concave shape. By suitable adjustment, slightly convex surfaces may be produced, Fig. 2 (not shown).
