Abstract
1386356 Zone melting PREUSSAG AG 17 July 1972 [15 July 1971] 33407/72 Heading B1S In a zone melting process wherein the material treated is in the form of an elongated charge e.g. a tube, and through which an electrical charge is passed longitudinally, the melted zone is formed in the region of a cross-section narrower which constricts the cross-section of the charge only in this region. The narrower may be a plate with an aperture smaller than the charge. The aperture may be annular in shape or have a substantially conical widening inlet or outlet. The charge may be pressed with constant force against the narrower e.g. by weight of the charge and/or additional weights. The charge may be moved against a plurality of narrowers if desired. The charge may be purified or formed into a monocrystal using a seed crystal. As shown in the figure the charge 1 is connected by lines 2 and 3 to a current source 4, and the charge reduced in cross-section by narrower 5, formed with a slot-shaped aperture 6, provided with inlet 7 and an outlet 6 which has a curved wall 8.
