Abstract
<PICT:0784363/III/1> An induction furnace for use in the production of silicon and other materials requiring similar reaction conditions comprises a cylinder 1 made of graphite rings or bricks surrounded by a heat-insulating and heat - resistant layer 2 preferably of powder; an opening 8 permits easy removal of the powder which may be alumina. A primary winding 3 causes heating in a charging and condensing zone A, a reaction zone B and a collecting zone C. A further winding 4 ensures that the charge is sufficiently molten for discharge at an opening 5 which is plugged during the melting process. The heating power of the coils may be regulated together or separately and may be replaced by a single coil having the turns unequally spaced to produce differing degrees of heating. A magnetic shield 7 is provided. The easy removal of the layer 2 enables portions of the cylinder 1 to be readily replaced.
