Abstract

886,707. Crucible furnaces. RUSS, L. April 21, 1959 [April 28, 1958], No. 13519/59. Class 51 (2). [Also in Group XI] An electric smelting furnace has a smelting chamber 1, Fig. 1, and one or more heatretaining and extraction chambers 8 mounted as an insert within the smelting chamber, one or more flow openings 14 being provided in the base or sides of the extraction chamber. The base of the extraction chamber is considerably spaced from the bottom of the smelting chamber so as to ensure the molten metal being supplied from that part of the melt which is hottest. The smelting chamber is surrounded by fireclay 3, or a detachable crucible, and is heated by a -coil 2. The extraction chamber may be made, e.g. of graphite, fireclay, magnesite or silimanite. The extraction chamber may be fitted concentrically or eccentrically within the smelting chamber, and the smelting chamber may be round or oval in cross-section. Two extraction chambers 18, Fig. 4, may be fitted into a smelting chamber 17 of oval cross-section.
