953,800. Magnetic deflection of arcs. W. C. HERAEUS G.m.b.H. Aug. 5, 1960 [Aug. 5, 1959], No. 27228/60. Drawings to Specification. Heading H5H. A vacuum electric arc furnace, having at least one magnetic coil mounted with its longitudinal axis substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the melting crucible of the furnace, is connected to apparatus for controlling the current supply to said at least one magnetic coil in order to reciprocate the electric arc and move it rapidly enough to cause substantially no rotary movement of the molten metal. A single fixed or vertically adjustable coil may be mounted so that its magnetic field extends over the whole of the crucible. Alternatively a plurality of fixed or adjustable coils or groups of coils may be mounted one above the other and switched in as required. The coils of a group may be connected together in pairs and may be secured to an iron ring forming a magnetic shunt.
