Abstract

862,931. Furnace electrodes. HERAEUS G. m.b.H., W. C. June 1, 1959 [May 31, 1958], No. 18601/59. Class 39 (3). In a vacuum electric arc furnace with a consumable electrode 11 which is welded inside the evacuated furnace to an electrode holder 8 having a butt end 10 of the same material as the electrode, a magnetic coil 12 which is provided to concentrate the welding arc during the welding operation is attached to a lifting device 13 so that its height can be adjusted. The upper furnace part 1 is preferably made from non-magnetic material e.g. stainless steel. The melting crucible 5 has a water cooling device 6 and a magnetic coil 7 for concentrating the electric arc during the melting process. In another embodiment the magnetic coil 12 is within the furnace and water-cooled. An observation window is provided in the furnace wall.
