Abstract
939,521. Electromagnetic stirring. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. March 2, 1961, No. 7720/61. Class 86. [Also in Group XI] A consumable electrode melting furnace comprising a crucible 10 having a water jacket 15 and an electrode 12 which melts and drips into the crucible when an arc is struck, is provided with an electromagnetic stirring device consisting of a coil 21 surrounding the water-jacket of the crucible; when a high amperage direct current is passed through the coil, vertical lines of magnetic force M act on the radial lines I of current flow to stir the material in the pool 18. The coil is of axial length less than its outside diameter and can be raised and lowered on guide rods 23. In a melting process primarily for magnetic material, the height of the centroid of the coil is maintained below the surface of the pool 18 by a distance preferably 1/6 to 2/3 the mean diameter of the coil, which is energized at successive stages of the melting process to produce a vertical flux density of 30 to 300 gauss at its centroid with a current of 40 to 160 amperes. U.S.A. Specifications 2,640,860 and 2,798,107 are referred to.
