Abstract

961,117. Arc desurfacing; welding by fusion. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. May 20, 1963 [May 24, 1962], No. 19890/63. Headings B3R and B3V. [Also in Division H5] In a process of arc refining or cleaning the surface of a metal body, e.g. a rod or sheet, a direct current arc struck between a non-consumable electrode and the body is advanced across the body to subject its surface to incipient fusion. A consumable electrode 15 fed by rolls 35 to an arc melting crucible 29 is surface refined by an arc between an annular fluid cooled electrode ring 11 as anode and the electrode 15 as cathode. Adjacent the ring 11 is a coil 13 supplied with direct current which sets up a field 17 causing the arc to rotate round the electrode 15. In a modification the refining apparatus is part of a welding head and surface cleans a consumable electrode as it is fed to the welding arc.
