Abstract

766,915. Welding by fusion. UNION CARBIDE & CARBON CORPORATION. Aug. 13, 1954 [Sept. 18, 1953], No. 23638/54. Drawings to Specification. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XXXV] A welding arc, particularly one in which the .electrode is continuously fed towards the work at a constant high speed and in which the arc is provided with a gas, or flux, shield, is supplied from a current source having a rising voltampere characteristic which is less steep than the characteristic of the arc. The source may be an over-compounded generator, a generator the excitation of which is controlled by a regulator responsive to arc current or voltage, or both, or, in the case of an A.C. arc, the welding circuit may include a saturable reactor provided with a feed-back winding designed to produce the desired characteristic. A weld may be terminated either by reducing the welding current or by stopping the electrode feed. In the case of spot welding the electrode may be brought into contact with the work to establish the arc and therafter maintained stationary so that it burns back and eventually extinguishes the arc. The electrode and the work may be carbon steel, copper, magnesium, aluminium, titanium or stainless steel.
