Abstract

731,953. Dividing by fusion. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Oct. 13, 1953 [Oct. 14, 1952; Feb. 23, 1953], Nos. 25675/52 and 4949/53. Class 83 (4). In cutting metals, a consumable electrode is continuously fed to an arc, shielded by an inert gas, struck between the electrode and the work, and the electrode and work are relatively moved to cut the work. A motor-driven trolley 14 runs on rails 15 and carries a reel 10 of ferrous wire which is fed by rollers 12 through a copper contact tube 13 to a head 18, which latter may be tilted for bevel cuts. Direct current is supplied to the tube 13 (positive) and argon is supplied to the tube from a cylinder. A selfregulating arc is established between the work, and the electrode and the head 18 is moved over the work. Alternatively the work may be moved and the head fixed or the head may be hand held. Ferrous metal, e.g. ferritic or stainless steel, may be cut as may be zinc and magnesium-zirconium alloy, and a wire of 18 per cent carbon, 44 per cent manganese, rest iron may be used for cutting aluminium or aluminium alloys. Alternating current with arc stabilization may be employed.
