Abstract

854,628. Welding by fusion. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. April 9, 1959 [April 11, 1958], No. 11682/58. Class 83 (4). In butt-welding metals, e.g. titanium, zirconium, aluminium and their alloys in an inert atmosphere, e.g. argon, using an electrode and a filler wire, the edges to be welded are formed to make a line contact only with each other. The welding apparatus comprises a gasshielded non-consumable electrode 25, Fig. 5, preceded by one or more grooved rolls 28 which may be spring-loaded and which press a filler wire 24 into a groove formed by full bevels on plates 10a, 11a. In a modification, Fig. 12, the filler wire is guided into the groove by a guide 30 and a roll 32. One edge only may be bevelled or as shown in Fig. 11, both edges may be curved. Alternatively the bevels may be formed in the underside of the plates 10a, 11a, Fig. 10, and the filler wire 24 is held in the groove while welding is carried out from above.
