617,831. Electric welding. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES, Ltd., KEEFE, E. J., and WILSON, L. B. Oct. 10, 1946, No. 30330. [Class 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVI] In roller lap-seam welding low resistance sheet-aluminium &c., higher-resistance and melting-point steel &c. strips of similar thickness are interposed between the work and the electrodes. The projecting flanges 8, 9 of an aluminium cable sheath 7 are welded between electrodes 2, 3, with steel strips 10, 11 fed from reels 12, 13 guided by arms 17, 18 between the flanges 8, 9 and the electrodes 2, 3. The electrodes 2, 3 are idle and fluid-pressed, and the feed depends on the take-up reels 24, 25 for the strips 10, 11 which are separated from the flanges 8, 9 by further guides 19, 20. In a modification for lap-welding sheets, a driven electrode is used with synchronized take-up reels. Continuous or intermittent overlapping seam welds may be produced. In an example 0.036 inch aluminium alloy D.T.D. 213A was welded at 13 feet per minute using 1 per cent carbon steel strips 0.036 inch thick and 50-cycle A.C. supply.
