Abstract
842,240. Making sheathed wires and cables. ELECTRARC Inc. Aug. 29, 1958 [Sept. 3, 1957], No. 27798/58. Class 83 (2). In a method of making shielded wire or cable a metallic ribbon is continuously folded around a wire or cable with a space between the wire or cable and the ribbon, the edges of the ribbon are joined at a seam, the seam is smoothed to uniform thickness and the shield is contracted on to the wire or cable. A ribbon s, e.g. of aluminium, Fig. 2, after passing between forming rolls 1 and 2 which bend it to flanged U-shape, is wrapped about a wire or cable w fed through a tube 3 from a reel R by rolls 5. The butted margins 6, Fig. 5, of the ribbon are welded by a welder 8, the welded seam of the shield s soformed is then smoothed out by passage through dies 9 and 11, Fig. 9, while the shield is spaced from the tube 3, and the shield s fiually swaged down by a device 12 into close contact with the wire.
