Abstract

1476321 Welding by fusion REYROLLE PARSONS Ltd 5 June 1974 [5 March 1973] 10592/73 Heading B3R In a method of and apparatus for inert gasshielded arc welding of a narrow weld groove 1 between members 2 and 3, a welding gun assembly 4 supports non-consumable electrode 5 and means for supplying shielding gas e.g. argon to the weld 7 comprises a gas cup 6 and a gas-confining structure provided by two elongate shields 8 and 9 which co-operate with the side walls of the groove 1 to surround the electrode and contain the gas. Filler wire 10 may be fed to the weld from guide tube 11. In Figs. 3 and 5 the shields 8 and 9 themselves are surrounded by a collapsible shroud 12 which rests on the upper surface of the members 2 and 3 in use and is connected to the gas cup by member 13. In Fig. 3 the shroud is telescopic but alternatively it may comprise a collapsible elongated tapering coil of metal strip. The welding current may be pulsed and the width of the groove 1 is preferably 1¢ to 4 times the diameter of the electrode 5.
