Abstract

1440974 Welding by fusion AGA AB 3 July 1973 31568/73 Heading B3R In a method of arc welding or weld surfacing using a non-consumable electrode 2, e.g. in a plasma torch 1, and filler material in the form of wire 5 being fed continuously into the arc 15 struck between electrode 2 and workpiece 14, a second arc between the non-consumable electrode and the filler wire is established at the same time as arc 15. The arc current to the workpiece and consequently the penetration into the base material thereof is therefore controlled by power source 13 and the current to and through the filler wire and consequently the filler deposition being controlled by a second power source 11. Additional filler wires, such as wire 8 may be fed into the arc 15 and simultaneous arcs established between these wires and electrode 2, the wires having the same power source 11 or individual power sources. Resistive heating of the filler wire may be controlled by varying the distance 16, Fig. 2, between the contact tube 6 and arc 15, connecting a controllable power source 11a across contact tubes 6, 6a and varying the distance therebetween. The wire feed rate may be altered.
