Abstract

1476980 Welding by fusion FAGERSTA AB 1 Oct 1974 [26 Oct 1973] 42620/74 Heading B3R An inert gas-shielded/plasma arc non-consumable (tungsten) electrode arc welding head comprises at least two elongate electrodes operable in tandem, and nozzles co-operable with the electrodes, the nozzles being interchangeable and the electrodes being displaceable in their longitudinal direction, such as to provide torches operable in TIG or constrictedarc (plasma arc) mode. As shown, the head comprises three electrodes 4-6 vertically displaceable in a holder 1. Interchangeable nozzles 7-9 are mounted in a body 3. A ceramic insulator 2 is disposed between the holder 1 and the body 3. The electrodes 4-6 are connected to separate and independently controllable current sources 11- 13 which are also connected to a workpiece 14. The inert/plasma forming gas for each electrode is individually controlled. In operation, as shown, the workpiece 14 is moved in the direction of arrow 15 and the three electrodes 4-6 operate in TIG, constricted-arc and less-constricted-arc modes.
