Abstract
1322841 Cables FUJIKURA CABLE WORKS Ltd 19 April 1971 [7 April 1970 8 June 1970] 27114/71 Heading H1A A method of making a cable comprises the steps of forming a metal/plastics composite tape, longitudinally wrapping the composite tape about a core with the metal surface innermost and finally extracting a plastics sheath. Metal tape 1, for example copper or aluminium is drawn from a drum 2, passed through a tension adjuster 6 and round a heating roller 7. A plastics tape 3 of width greater than that of the metal tape 1 is drawn from a drum 4 and fed together with the metal tape 7 between rollers 8 which apply pressure to heat bond the tapes to form a composite tape 9. As the plastics tape is of greater width it is left with at least one side portion which is not bonded to the metal tape. Folding device 10 folds these excess portions around the edges of the metal tape. Cooling device 15 cools the tape 9 before it enters a former 16 which wraps the tape about a core 11, with the metal innermost, so that the edges overlap and the folded over portion 14 of plastics tape is interposed between them (see Fig. 4). An extruder 17 extrudes a plastics sheath 5 which bonds to the plastics of the tape and also causes the overlapped portions of plastics tape to bond together. Preferred plastics for the composite tape are ionomer, ethyleneethylacrylate copolymer, ethylene-methylacrylate copolymer, ethylene-acrylic acid copolymer, ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer polyethylene and vinyl chloride.
