Abstract
1302626 Cable joints GENERAL CABLE CORP 8 March 1971 6237/71 Heading H2E A cable joint is insulated by dielectric tape, at least two successive layers of a stretchable, self-bonding dielectric tape of elastomeric material being disposed alternately with single layers of a low loss tape having a lower dielectric loss value than the elastomeric tape. The conductors 10 are joined by a split tube 15 crimped on to the ends and a semi-conductive shield 16 is placed there around. Each two or more successive elastomeric layers 18, for example a butyl or EPR tape, are followed by a single layer 19 of a cross-linked polyethylene or polypropylene tape. Successive layers 18 of the elastomeric tape are wound in opposite directions, while each layer 19 of the low loss tape is wound in the same direction as the layer 18 immediately below it, with the next layer 18 in the same direction. The low loss tape layers 19 are laid at a temperature of 130‹ C. so that they shrink as they cool and are laid in an open spiral so that the elastomeric layers 18 on each side bond together through the openings between the spiral-turns. The tape layers are covered with a semi-conductive shield 20 and a metal sheath 21.
