Abstract

1292476 Sealing cable joints PIRELLI GENERAL CABLE WORKS Ltd 11 June 1971 [29 June 1970] 31439/70 Heading H2E The ends of the metal sheaths 3 of two jointed cables 1, 2 are divided longitudinally of the cables and bent outwardly to form petals 15 which are electrically connected to the ends of a metallic sleeve 12, there being caps 18 each having one end embracing and sealed to the outermost surface of a respective one of the cables and an opposite end embracing and sealed to the sleeeve or any protective layer covering the sleeve, the joint being filled with an insulating medium. The ends of petals 15 of the aluminium sheaths are folded back to form flanges 16 and are cold welded to the sleeve ends which may also be divided longitudinally to form leaves overlying the flanges 16. The plastics caps 18 fit closely around the outer plastics covering 4 of the cables and a P.V.C. covering 14 of the aluminium sleeve 12 and are sealed thereto by heat shrinkable plastics sleeves 19, 20, or by heat bonding tape or solvent welding. The joint is filled via apertures 22 closable by plastics covers 24, the sleeve between adjacent petals opposite the apertures being cut away.
